Telefónica has again won the exclusive broadcast rights to top-flight Spanish football after the controversial involvement of the competition commission.
The telco will pay €1.29 for the exclusive broadcast rights to five games per matchday.
In 2021, Telefónica was awarded the rights for five seasons (from 2022/23 to 2026/27). However, the National Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC) questioned the duration of the contract against Telefónica’s dominance in the market.
Despite the views of the CNMC, the football authorities decided it should retender the contract mid-season to avoid any future legal uncertainty.
Telefónica re-entered the contest for so-called Lots 1 and 3, bidding €250 million for the 2024/25 season and €520 million for each of the 2025/26 and 2026/2027 seasons.
In the first 18 weeks, Telefónica will have the first pick of the matches and the second pick for the remainder of the season, leaving DAZN to air the remaining 45% of La Liga matches.
A few weeks ago Telefónica was awarded the rights to the Champions League until 2027.
