Premier Sports, which built a rights portfolio including La Liga, Scottish Cup, and United Rugby Championship before selling to Viaplay is to return.
Viaplay Group paid £30 million (€35.2 million) to acquire the UK sports streamer in July 2022. Subsequently, financial pressures led Viaplay to announce a new strategy that would focus on its core business in the Nordics and the Netherlands, and its Viaplay Select operations.
In a statement, Premier Sports said it would be returning to the UK in early 2024 having agreed to take back control of the business, subject to regulatory approval.
Premier Sports will resume on Sky, Virgin, Amazon Prime and Apple, before launching its own “newly enhanced” streaming service.
The new service will feature 24/7 access to the 2 Premier Sports TV channels plus access to additional live sports.
On Wednesday, Viaplay Group it had rescheduled its Q3 2023 financial results to after close of trading on NASDAQ Stockholm in order to continue discussions with its largest shareholders, debt providers and bondholders regarding the potential recapitalisation of the Group.
