The Portuguese regulator ANACOM has asked operators to adopt “due restraint” in price increases, be they in tariffs to new subscribers or in current contracts.
In a statement, it says that this is “in view of the current economic context and that projected for 2024, which point to a situation of inflationary pressure and an increase in the cost of living, with an annual variation of 4.6% for the consumer price index being forecast for 2023”, adding that it considers “there are important economic and social reasons that must be duly considered by companies in the sector”.
ANACOM also says that this and other recommendation “are made in a context in which more than 40% of the population residing in Portugal was at risk of poverty (2021 data) and the price level of electronic communications services in Portugal remains significantly high: in 2022, prices in Portugal were 21.1% above the European Union average”.
