French media regulator Arcom has authorised public broadcasters France 2 and France 3 to broadcast on the country’s DTT system (TNT).
It follows a request from the government to authorise the two France Televisions channels. This distribution would cover a large part of mainland France and nine overseas communities.
France 3 will broadcast the national version that is also regionalised in its HD version. Both France 2 and France 3 will comntinue to broadcast in HD.
Distribution in France could begin with weeks, subject to a successful negotiation with the multiplex operators. Arcom is in the process of contracting the local authorities in the French overseas territories to get transmissions underway.
France 2 and France 3 will broadcast in the DVB-T2 and HEVC standards that have been adopted by most UHD televisions marketed since 2017.
Arcom has also been in touch with private broadcasters that have also expressed an interest in the UHD format.
