According to the regulator NMHH, it looked at the number of users and time spent viewing three international (Disney+, HBO Max, Netflix) and two Hungarian streaming service providers (RTL Most, TV2 Play) and two Hungarian video sharing services (Jobbmintatv.online, Videa.hu) between April and June this year.
The results show that the seven were visited by around 2.63 million people on a weekly basis, and by more than half of internet users, or 4.16 million people, on a monthly basis.
In addition, the length of time spent on websites and applications was also significant: people spent two and a half hours a week and nearly seven hours a month watching movies.
Significantly, these data only show the content consumption of those Hungarians who watch films on a mobile phone, tablet or computer. They are joined by those who use, for example, use smart TVs, which will certainly further increase both the number of users and the length of time spent watching movies.
In Hungary, Netflix and Videa are the most popular, with each boasting one million visitors, followed by HBO Max and Disney+, which are visited by half a million each, while the Jobbmintatv.online page is viewed by nearly 300,000 people per week. At the end of the list are the services of the two major commercial TV stations: in April, more than 300,000 more people watched TV2 Play, then the number of viewers began to drop sharply, and at the beginning of the summer it stood at 100,000.
Meanwhile, RTL Most’s offer was chosen by an average of 145,000 people per week. Overall, in the course of an average week, almost half (46.3%, or 735,000 people) of the youngest age group (16–29), two fifths (39.7%, or 1.5 million people) of those between 30–59, while slightly less than a third aged 60-75 (32.2%, or 357,000 people) visited the seven services’ sites or one of their associated applications. On average, the youngest group of users spent more time on this form of entertainment than their older peers, nearly two hours and forty minutes per week. It is worth noting that both Disney+ and Netflix were particularly popular with people under the age of 30.
At least one and half times as many people who watched movies or series online in any week during the period in question did so on mobile phones or tablets compared to desktop computers or tablets. The exception was those watching HBO Max.
