SABC and Multichoice have reached a last minute agreement to sub license rights to the Cricket World Cup.
Multichoice, which acquired the rights from the ICC for its Supersport channel, had been under pressure to share the coverage that is taking place in India.
Following the agreement, SABC will broadcast all South African games, including the semi-final, final and closing ceremony.
However, MultiChoice has restricted the broadcast of the Cricket World Cup 2023 on the free-to-air OVHD/eMedia platform, leading SABC to formally log a complaint with the Competition Commission regarding Multichoice’s behaviour on the matter.
To mitigate the cricket blackout on OVHD, the SABC has approached eMedia to jointly acquire the Cricket World Cup 2023 rights from MultiChoice to ensure all eMedia OVHD customers are able to view these games. However, eMedia has not agreed to the proposal.
