A modernisation project is underway in France after the regulator Arcom confirmed it has given the go-ahead for the launch of Ultra High Definition television services from public broadcasters France 2 and France 3.
Broadcasts will be carried on the digital terrestrial television (TNT) network and through the set-top boxes of IPTV providers.
The Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games have been set as the deadline for the rollout.
40% of French viewers watch television through TNT.
Over the next few months Arcom will issue the necessary frequency authorisations.
According to Jacques Donat-Bouillud, Director of Development for Distribution Networks at France Télévisions, the launch of France 2 and the national channel of regional network France 3 in UHD is scheduled for the end of the first quarter of 2024, at the latest.
This deployment will be carried out progressively across the territory, transmitter by transmitter. The first sites in the Grand Est region should be operational as early as January or February 2024.
It is expected that 72% of the French population will be able to enjoy the Olympics in ultra-high definition through TNT. Following that, other programs will also be offered in UHD. “Everything we set in motion for major sports events benefits the entire program lineup of France Télévisions,” explained Delphine Ernotte Cunci, the President of France Télévisions, during a conference on the future of TNT.
