Bouygues Telecom has begun manufacturing remote controls made from 100% recycled plastic taken from its own used remote controls.
The French operator has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, in line with the Paris Agreement. In order to achieve this it has brought in a series of actions that include optimising the lifecycle of its products and developing an eco-design structure.
Its working with ruwido to produce more sustainable remote controls for its Bbox 4k HDR TV set-top box. Since September 2023, 100% of the housing of these new remote controls is made from recycled plastic sourced from the housing of used Bouygues Telecom remote controls, with no new plastic included in the manufacturing process.
“Bouygues Telecom is one of the first telecom operators to implement this circular economy model. This is just the first step because starting 2024, 100% of the new remote controls for our Bbox TV set-top boxes will be produced from recycled materials sourced from Bouygues Telecom’s used products,” says Laure Joslet, Deputy General Manager for the Consumer and Professional Market at Bouygues Telecom. “During this European Sustainable Development Week, Bouygues Telecom demonstrates its ability to innovate and evolve its production methods to reduce the environmental footprint of its products, and we are very proud of it.”
In 2023, 21,435 kg of recycled materials were collected from Bouygues Telecom’s old equipment, which will be used to manufacture 428,000 new remote controls, a significant reduction in the amount of plastic.
“I am incredibly proud for almost 2 decades of great cooperation and partnership with Bouygues Telecom. The joint mind-set to take care of our planet of both Bouygues and ruwido is now underlined with a closed recycling loop to reuse Bouygues Telecom own post-consumer material to produce new products. This is truly a huge step towards a better world,” adds Ferdinand Maier, owner and CEO of ruwido.
The closed-loop recycling approach, adopted by Bouygues, is expected to save 21 metric tons of CO2 in 2024, equivalent to 96,507 kilometres travelled by a petrol-powered car.
