One of the largest distribution platforms in the United States has warned CNN that its new streaming service risks violating the contract between the two businesses.
The message was contained in a letter sent by DirecTV to CNN’s parent company Warner Bros. Discovery.
The New York Times reported the matter on Tuesday having spoken with two people about the matter.
CNN Max, is available through Max, Warner Bros. Discovery’s most popular streaming service.
Warner Bros. Discovery hasn’t commented on the story, but says it “maintains strong and meaningful relationships with our affiliate partners.”
DirecTV has not commented directly.
The move marks an early friction between distribution platforms, which pay many millions of dollars each year to have CNN in their line-up, and the channels that want to take control of their content.
In the case of CNN Max, the service is largely based on CNN International, which is not generally distributed in the United States.
