Pay-TV and paid video content revenues grow in Germany in 2022

August 31, 2023 12.07 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

The range of services and demand for pay-TV and paid video content continues to develop positively in Germany, even in a difficult market environment with high burdens for consumers.

In the past year 2022, revenues from pay-TV and paid video-on-demand in Germany grew by around 5% to €4.9 billion. For the current year 2023, German industry association VAUNET expects a further increase in total revenues of around 8% to €5.3 billion.

The DACH region – Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland – also remains on a growth course: in 2022, total sales rose by around 4% to €5.8 billion and are expected to exceed the €6 billion hurdle for the first time in 2023 with €6.3 billion.

VAUNET documents this development with its annual publication Pay-TV and Paid-VoD in Germany, which was presented today in Berlin for 2022 as well as 2023.

According to the report, the number of pay-TV subscriptions in Germany increased to 10.1 million in 2022 (2021: 9.6 million). For 2023, the association expects an increase in pay-TV subscriptions to around 10.3 million. The number of SVOD subscribers nationwide was 19.8 million at the end of 2022 and will exceed the 20 million mark in the current year with 20.8 million, according to the VAUNET forecast.

“The positive market development in economically difficult times for consumers as well as companies shows the unbroken high attractiveness of pay-TV, streaming and on-demand services. We see further growth prospects for the coming years, which, however, also depend to a large extent on the regulatory framework. Additional burdens such as investment requirements by the government weaken the market dynamics, while incentive models would provide positive impulses,” said VAUNET Managing Director Frank Giersberg.
