The EBU has given its support to a draft paper published by the European Commission’s Radio Spectrum Policy Group backing the use of the lower UHF band for DTT transmissions.
The organisation that represents Europe’s public broadcasters says it welcomes the approach that encompasses all aspects of the possible uses of the band. In particular, it commends remarks it interprets as signally the continued mixed use of the sub band after 2030.
“RSPG believes that DTT will continue to play an essential role for the foreseeable future due to its characteristics of delivering high-quality linear services to mass audiences and ensuring universal and free-to-air access for citizens.”
Broadcasting services need to retain access to the 470-694 MHz band well beyond 2030 and possibly until at least 2040.
The Draft Opinion also recognises that Member States have not made use of the existing regulatory environment to introduce mobile cellular (IMT) networks or PPDR services below 700 MHz.
