The Parliamentary Commission responsible for overseeing Italy’s radio and TV services has been told public broadcaster RAI has committed to introducing a national multiplex in the DVB-T2.
The development emerged during a session last Thursday, when the Minister of Enterprise, Senator Adolfo Urso, presented the case for renewing the Service Contract between MIMIT and the RAI public Concessionaire.
Senator Urso told the hearing that RAI has committed to implementing its national multiplex in the DVB-T2 standard by January 10, 2024. RAI will also undertake the transition of the remaining multiplexes to DVB-T2 as per the Ministry’s roadmap.
Senator Urso said that Rai’s adoption of DVB-T2 will position them as an ‘innovation accelerator’, benefiting not only the broadcasting industry but also the local TV sector, which holds significant historical and cultural importance for our country.
In response, Adv. Marco Rossignoli, the coordinator of Aeranti-Corallo, expressed the local television sector’s satisfaction with the plan.
Aeranti-Corallo, which represents local, satellite, and internet radio and television companies, has been advocating for this transition for quite some time. Rossignoli pointed out that the current, outdated DVB-T technology severely limits local television broadcasters’ radio-electric capacity to deliver programs with adequate technical quality.
With the transition to DVB-T2/HEVC, local TV stations will finally have the necessary transmission capacity to broadcast in good quality including HD, marking a significant improvement for the sector.
