Spanish public broadcaster RTVE is to launch a new channel in the Ultra HD format.
The Board of Directors has given the go ahead for the channel to commence broadcasting on February 15, 2024. Broadcasts in UHD-4K will be available free-to-air on the DTT platform.
The move coincides with the switch-off of standard definition transmissions of RTVE’s services that are slated to come to an end by February 14 at the latest. High Definition will continue unaffected.
RTVE has been working with the transmission company Cellnex Telecom and has run tests that cover 60% of the population.
Tests have been running since November 20 and have included broadcasts of World Cup matches in Qatar, in UHD, with HDR and Dolby Atmos sound, using a complete channel within a multiplex.
The UHD channel will occupy capacity assigned to RGE2 within the current National DTT Technical Plan.
