nexfibre, the InfraVia Capital Partners, Liberty Global and Telefónica joint venture has gone live for anchor tenant Virgin Media O2.
nexfibre’s hyper-fast network uses the latest XGS-PON architecture and will enable Virgin Media O2 to extend its fibre footprint to up to 23 million homes by 2028, around 80% of the UK. Virgin Media O2, which is acting as both construction partner and anchor tenant, is on target to deliver full fibre connectivity to 5 million premises by the end of 2026.
Consumers and businesses in a number of towns and cities can now connect to nexfibre in a number of towns and cities in what is the UK’s first national-scale challenger to BT Openreach
“We are investing £4.5 billion to roll out our new network which will boost the UK’s digital economy by creating thousands of jobs and getting millions more homes and businesses online,” said Bernardo Quinn, CEO at nexfibre.
Financed through £4.5 billion of equity and debt investment, the combination of XGS-PON technology and fibre connections will provide consumers and businesses with more bandwidth as the technology enables symmetrical upload and download speeds of up to 10Gbps. XGS-PON will also support the UK’s net zero transition as the technology uses a passive optical network, which means lower energy consumption.
