Chris Dziadul Reports: Feeling Content in Budapest

June 9, 2023 10.12 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

The Hungarian capital, Budapest will host a special event later this month.

Content Budapest 2023: Act local, think global, will aim to “boost new programming relationships across Central and Eastern Europe and connect fresh creativity with international partners”.
The format of the event will be a two-day international coproduction conference running alongside a market and a ‘Content Budapest Pitch Competition’ designed to uncover fresh shows that can work across markets. Broadband TV News will be participating in the conference, moderating sessions entitled Content Trends: Pay-TV and Fundamentals: New revenue streams in FAST.

It’s clear that despite the many changes now taking place in the industry, pay-TV is still very much alive in CEE and is here to stay for the foreseeable future. It nevertheless faces a number of challenges and these will be discussed in the pay-TV session by key executives from Network 4 (Nick Doff), United Media (Tatjana Pavlovic), Warner Bros. Discovery Poland (Dorota Eberhardt) and M7 Group (Bill Wijdeveld).

Meanwhile, FAST is all the rage at present but still very much in infancy in CEE, certainly compared to Western Europe and of course the US. In the FAST panel, key executives from Rakuten TV (Anna Michalowska) and Wedotv (Philipp Rotermund) will discuss its prospects for the region and if it can generate new revenues streams.

The latter point is particularly interesting, given that new research by Omdia discussed at NEM Dubrovnik earlier this week forecast that FAST revenues in the region could reach $42 million by 2028.

While it’s hard to argue with this figure at present, it could prove to be way off the mark, given that five years is a long time in the industry. What is clear, however, is that FAST is likely to develop more rapidly in certain markets – Poland, for instance – than others.

Content Budapest will take place at Kempinski Hotel in Budapest from June 27-29. For further details please go to https://contentbudapest.tv
