VodafoneZiggo runs first DOCSIS 4.0

May 25, 2023 12.19 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Dutch cabler VodafoneZiggo has become the first company in the world to conduct a DOCSIS 4.0 test over a live network.

The operator says it’s expecting network capacity to grow significantly over the next few years.

“We consistently continue to invest in our networks in order to continue providing the best customer experience on both the mobile and fixed networks. VodafoneZiggo’s fibre-optic cable network is future-proof anyway,” says Eben Albertyn, Executive Director Technology, VodafoneZiggo.

At the end of 2022, VodafoneZiggo was the first provider to complete the immense task of being able to offer 1 Gbit/s internet nationwide.

“Customers increasingly want more reliable internet; they want to be connected to multiple devices at the same time, at home and on the go. The capacity of the network is so large that it is almost unimaginable what you can do with it. For example, video streaming and gaming at home with several people at once or being able to collaborate digitally in a large hospital with several departments, said Albertyn.

The test took place at the VodafoneZiggo TEC Campus in Amsterdam, where the company trains its engineers and tests new innovations.

VodafoneZiggo has been on DOCSIS 3.1 since 2019; it says speeds of 1 Gbps are more than enough for most households. For example, 80 people can hold simultaneous meetings via MS Teams and 40 people can watch TV at the same time in 4K quality.

DOCSIS 4.0 could offer speeds of 10 Gbps.
