Members of the European VOD Coalition have expressed disappointment after the European Commission said it would not review its Recommendation on tackling online piracy until November 2025.
“Whilst we appreciate and welcome the Commission recommendation, calling upon member states to step up and provide effective measures to combat live piracy, we are disappointed to read that the Commission has decided to delay taking a decision on whether binding rules are needed for another two and a half years,” the organisation said in a statement, which also bemoaned the absence of a “clear timeline” to determine the effectiveness of the Recommendation.
Under the proposals broadcasters and sports rights holders would be encouraged to secure injunctions against the online piracy of their events.
“The Recommendation encourages the use of blocking injunctions tailored to live events and, in the case of live sports events, encourages member states to grant legal standing to sports event organisers to seek an injunction where it is currently not possible,” according to a statement issued by the Commission.
Earlier this week, a group of 24 MEPs wrote to the European Commission President asking for a shorter review clause to be added the recommendation.
