A group of 24 MEPs has written to the European Commission President asking for a shorter review clause to be added to an upcoming Recommendation on combatting online piracy of sports and other live events.
The letter by the cross-party group to Ursula von der Leyen comes ahead of a Recommendation due to be published this week.
They’re asking for a brief review clause for the assessment of the Recommendation, of no later than one year, as opposed to the three years currently on the table.
In the letter, the MEPs note the Commission’s reflection in the Recommendation that addresses piracy of sports and other live content.
They also want consistency with President Von Der Leyen’s previous exchanges with the European Parliament, where the top European leader had committed to propose legislation should a non-legislative instrument be insufficient.
The wording is the Recommendation is also concerning the Live Content Coalition, which is affiliated with the Association of Commercial Television.
In a separate letter, the Coalition says, “It is evident that the current text of the Recommendation simply does not do this soon enough despite the flagrant ongoing theft of highly valuable, proprietary content across Europe.”
