Czech kids channel retains top spot

April 13, 2023 12.59 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

The public broadcaster’s CT Decko was the most highly rated channel in the Czech Republic for the third year running in 2022.

According to Pavel Müller, head of research & marketing at Atmedia, which commercially represents almost 30 thematic TV stations on the Czech market and carried out the research, “CT Decko defended its first place in the ranking of the best-rated TV stations on the Czech market for the third time in a row. The channels Prima Zoom and National Geographic also achieved a very similar rating, which again placed them in second and third place”.

In addition, a total of five of the 10 best-rated TV channels were occupied by documentary channels, as in the previous two years. In addition to Prima Zoom and National Geographic, they were, for example, the Discovery Channel or Animal Planet. HBO and CT Sport were also long-term well-rated TV channels.

The ranking of the 10 best-rated TV channels has been stable for a long time, with the same eight TV stations are regularly placed in it every year. At the same time, however, last year individual TV stations achieved a slightly lower rating than in 2020 and 2021.

Müller added: “almost all TV channels that we included in the research had a lower atmedia index last year than in previous years. The average atmedia index of all television channels for the past year is 61.6 points, which is 2.6 points less than in 2021 and 2.1 points less than in 2020”.

However, he also drew attention to a positive trend, where the difference between the best and worst-rated TV channel decreases every year. The resulting atmedia index of the best rated CT Decko for last year is 77.6 points, at the opposite end is the TV channel with a score of 42.8. Even a year ago, the difference was 50.9 points.

The best-rated attributes that contribute to the overall Atmedia index include the long-term visual quality of broadcasts, programme composition and the quality of TV programmes. “This applies primarily to documentaries, but also to children’s or film channels. They are the ones their viewers would most often recommend to their friends. Other investigated attributes include, for example, visual identity or the overall impression of television channels”.

In addition to evaluating the quality of television channels, the Atmedia index also examines supported knowledge among viewers. The most well-known TV stations are, unsurprisingly, the full-format Nova, Prima and CT 1, followed by other full-screen stations of these TV groups. “However, some paid thematic TV stations with a long-term built brand also achieve high levels of knowledge. Such an example can be HBO, National Geographic or Disney Channel,” added Müller.
