Outlander star Richard Rankin is to take the role of John Rebus in a new drama based on Sir Ian Rankin’s Inspector Rebus novels.
The six-part drama is the first Original the Nordic streaming service has created for the UK market. Produced by Eleventh Hour Films, it’s the first adaptation of a Rebus story for 15 years.
Rankin, who is no relation to the author, takes on the character played by Ken Stott and John Hannah in three series broadcast on ITV between 2000 and 2007.
The compelling new story follows 40-year-old police detective John Rebus (Richard Rankin), who finds himself at a psychological crossroads following an altercation with an infamous Edinburgh gangster.
“I’m thrilled to be taking on the role of Rebus. I’m a big fan of the series and Sir Ian Rankin. I feel very lucky to be given the honour of bringing such an iconic Scottish character back to TV screens and will give all I have to do it justice,” said Richard Rankin on the part.
Sir Ian Rankin’s Inspector Rebus novels have sold more than 30 million copies and been translated into 36 languages.
Filippa Wallestam, Viaplay Group Chief Content Officer said: “To have such a famous character spearheading Viaplay’s original storytelling in the UK is a privilege. We’re delighted to have the brilliant Richard Rankin onboard to portray Rebus and all his complexities. I have no doubt that viewers are in for a treat.”
It’s hoped that Rebus will become a regular series on the Viaplay streaming service.
