Viaplay has made its much-anticipated debut in the United States.
The streamer is releasing several thousand hours of Nordic-produced content including US premieres of several popular Nordic Noir series such as crime drama Trom and thriller Furia.
Upcoming Originals include the biopic The Dreamer – Becoming Karen Blixen starring Connie Nielsen; Hilma, directed by Academy Award nominee Lasse Hallström; and English-Swedish drama series Cell 8.
Viaplay is being priced in the United States at $5.99 a month following a seven-day free trial. At launch, it will be available through Comcast’s Xfinity and Xumo platforms and as part of The Roku Channel’s Premium Subscriptions line-up.
“Viaplay’s direct-to-consumer streaming service is now widely available in the US,” said Vanda Rapti, Viaplay Group Chief Commercial Officer, North America & Viaplay Select, in a prepared statement. “As the global leader in original Nordic content, we’re excited for US audiences to have access to more new series and films from the Nordic region than ever before, and at just $5.99 with thousands of hours of high quality, exclusive programming, Viaplay offers subscribers an incredible value for their streaming dollars.”
Viaplay nearly doubled its subscriber count in 2022 to 7.3 million. The last quarter of the year alone saw 890,000 new subs added to the total.
Viaplay is now available in 11 markets including the Nordic and Baltic countries, UK, Poland and the Netherlands.
Viaplay’s North American direct-to-consumer offering will expand to Canada on March 7, 2023.
