RT France has announced its closure following a recent round of European Union sanctions led to the freezing of its assets in the country.
Russia has responded to the move by threatening retaliatory action. In a statement quoted by Tass, the country’s Foreign Ministry said: “Blocking RT France account will lead to retaliatory measures against French media in Russia. They will be very noticeable, if the French authorities do not stop intimidating Russian journalists”.
As previously reported by Broadband TV News, last July, The Grand Chamber of the Court of Justice of the European Union rejected in its entirety a request by RT France (formerly Russia Today) to cancel a broadcasting ban on the channel.
Although RT was banned by the EU in March last year, it continued its operation in France targeting French-speaking countries in Africa.
RT France made its debut in December 2017.
