Russia’s Orion and Viasat expand cooperation

January 17, 2023 12.30 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

The Orion group of companies and pay-TV company Viasat have signed a series of new partnership agreements.

Orion currently distributes Viasat’s 13 channels from its platform on the Express-80 satellite located at 80 degrees East. According to Orion, the broadcast management system of the Viasat channels on the Russian market has now been optimised and improved.

It adds that the uniqueness of the technical task lies in the fact that most Viasat channels have several versions. At the Orion playout complex, 12 basic versions of HD and one SD are being formed. For six versions, advertising is inserted. In addition, 13 SD versions are generated using downscale, reducing the resolution from HD to SD.

Thanks to new technological solutions developed by the Orion group of companies, the Viasat TV channel broadcasting management system has been improved and modernised, additional dedicated 24/7 broadcast groups were formed, the automated monitoring system was expanded and communication channels were increased to transmit the required signal volume.
Orion also says that a separate complex technical solution is required for the Viasat Sport channel.

Commenting on the expanded cooperation, Andrey Trufanov, head of the telecommunication services department at Orion, said: “We love working on Viasat projects. This is always a challenge for the technical platform, upgrading competencies and stimulating the development of the team. The scale of the tasks set by the client required the purchase of a large amount of additional equipment. And we are glad that we were able to implement the project in the way our customer wanted”.

Alexei Krol, general director of Viasat, added: “For many years, Orion has been performing for us a complex of works of various formats. Cooperating with the company, you feel how the whole team is not just striving to fulfill contractual obligations in full, but together with you is thinking about how to develop the business, what solutions can optimise this or that process. This is especially valuable. With such a partner, we are interested in developing together!”
