Spain’s Telefónica plans to strengthen and diversify its offer on Movistar+ in the face of growing competition from Netflix.
El Economista reports that despite including football, series and indeed Netflix, Disney+ and DAZN in its offer, the telco’s subscriber total fell by more than 200,000 to 3.55 million in the year to September 30. However, customers who cancelled their Movistar+ subscriptions did not move to competing operators, with Vodafone TV losing 10,000 and no comparable figures for Orange Spain being available.
Quoting market analysts, El Economista points out that customers do not need to subscribe to Movistar+ in order to enjoy Netflix and Disney+. However, Movistar+ does have an advantage over the standalone DAZN service as it shows all, rather than most LaLiga matches.
Significantly, El Economista also says that Telefónica has no intention of putting Movistar+ up for sale, as may have been considered at the beginning of this year.
