The Slovenian public will be asked to vote on how the country’s public broadcaster RTVS is run in a referendum on November 27.
According to N1, the government plans to amend existing legislation in order to depoliticise the broadcaster.
This would result in the programming and supervisory boards, currently numbering a total of 29 members, being replaced by a 17-member unified board.
The new board would not be appointed by the National Assembly and therefore free of political influence.
The main opposition SDS party, on the other hand, believes that the government is trying to dispose of the management and programming councillors at RTVS.
It therefore began collecting signatures for a referendum and managed to reach the required number of 40,000 in 35 days.
