Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (rbb), the regional affiliate of German public broadcaster ARD serving federal states Berlin and Brandenburg, will accompany the crime series Polizeiruf 110 with the new HbbTV application ‘Xplore’ on October 27, 2022 for the first time.
Viewers watching the episode Der Fremde im Spiegel (“The Stranger in the Mirror”) at 22:15 CEST on TV channel rbb Fernsehen via streaming can access additional information about the actors and filming locations via ‘Xplore’. The function can be started via the Polizeiruf 110 widget in the ARD start application for HbbTV.
As soon as the film is paused, pictures and names of the actors and locations appear, with detailed information accessible via the remote control. At the end of the film, all information can also be called up in an overview.
With the service, rbb offers viewers “completely new possibilities for additional information integrated directly on the screen,” said Dirk Lüdemann, Head of the Distribution Division within rbb’s Production and Operations Department. “Links to other content and programmes are also possible with the function, offering a lot of potential.”
According to rbb, the ‘Xplore’ function should run on all HbbTV devices; there are no special requirements for use. rbb is bringing the ARD innovation to screens throughout Germany for the first time. The service JAY of the technology company transfermedia production services from Potsdam-Babelsberg is used for the service.
The next programme to be equipped with the ‘Xplore’ feature will be the docudrama Kennedy’s Love for Europe in May 2023.
