Chris Dziadul Reports: Events return to CEE

September 23, 2022 11.18 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

In-person media and telecom industry events have finally returned to Central and Eastern Europe after a challenging two years.

Looking ahead, there will be at least four taking place in the region in the fourth quarter, with October a particularly busy month. It will start with the 49th PIKE (Polish Chamber of Electronic Communications) conference and exhibition, held at the Copernicus Hotel in Torun on October 3-5.

Taking as its theme Media and Telecommunications in the world of VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity), the event will be attended by representatives of the Government, Parliament, European Commission, regulators, foreign and domestic cable network operators, TV broadcasters, suppliers and producers of audiovisual content and equipment, infrastructure, technological and ICT solutions.

Next up will be an event jointly organised by the MKSZ (Hungarian Communications Association) and MKHSZ (Hungarian Cable Television and Communications Association) in the Erkel Hotel in Gyula on October 9-10. It will be of particular interest, given the MKSZ’s recent suggestion that legal DDOS attacks should be used to address the problem of linear broadcasting and VOD piracy in Hungary.

This will be followed by the 8th National Convention of the Association for Electronic Communications in Romania (A.C.e.R), held at the Marriott Hotel in Bucharest on October 13. Established as recently as 2014, the A.C.e.R has in the space of only a few years gained over 65 members from all sectors of the industry. They include leading international content providers such as Discovery Networks, Sony Pictures and NBCUniversal; leading Romanian broadcasters (Antena Group); international OTT platforms (Ownzones); satellite operators (SES Astra); manufacturers; and infrastructure service providers.

Moving on to later in the year, Croatia’s Mediavision, which has organised a highly successful event in Dubrovnik for the last 10 years, will hold the latest edition of its Zagreb event at the city’s Esplanade Hotel on December 7-9. This will be a welcome return for NEM Zagreb, which was launched in 2019 and missed the last two years due to the pandemic. It will focus specifically on content creation and include screenings, panel discussions and networking, with its main objectives being “to educate, connect and promote professionals, companies and projects from the CEE region”.
