Nadine Dorries has stepped down as culture secretary, though hinted she had been asked to stay on by incoming Prime Minister Liz Truss.
In a letter to Boris Johnson, she said she’s “better-placed” to help the new government from outside the Cabinet. Ms Dorries is widely tipped to be elevated to the House of Lords in Mr Johnson’s resignation honours list.
The former nurse and part time novelist was elected to the safe seat of Mid Bedfordshire in 2005.
A close ally of Mr Johnson, she was appointed culture secretary in 2021, following a spell in the Department for Health and Social Care.
Her time in the post included the launch of the controversial sale process for Channel 4, the ongoing undermining by government of the BBC, and an admission before the House of Commons Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee that she had shared her Netflix password with other households.
