The Court of Appeal in Rome has rejected a petition from video sharing platform Vimeo against a 2019 ruling for failing to remove 2,000 videos featuring content from broadcaster Mediaset.
Vimeo had previously been ordered to pay €8.5 million in compensation to the Mediaset company RTI.
Judge Gianna Maria Zannella reiterated the original ruling, saying Vimeo was running “in all likenesses” a video on demand service where “audiovisual content is precisely catalogued, indexed and correlated with each other, thus creating value for Vimeo and for paying users.”
The original fine was set at one thousand euros for each individual violation and a penalty of €500 for each day of delay in removal.
It’s another blow for Vimeo, which last month announced it was laying off 6% of its workforce citing challenging market conditions.
