The overwhelming majority (91%) of households in Hungary subscribe to some kind of pay-TV service.
Furthermore, according to a survey conducted in the autumn of 2021 and published by the regulator NMHH, 1% say they do not have a TV subscription but instead pay for a movie library service.
NMHH notes that TV viewing figures in Hungary, at over four hours a day, remain among the highest in Europe. There are also no signs of cord cutting such as those seen in the US.
However, while TV viewing habits are stable, the way programming is accessed has changed considerably. According to data from the 20 largest fixed-line service providers, at the end of 2018 almost one in four (24.5%) of households received it via satellite or terrestrial TV. This fell to 19.5% in just three years, meaning that one in five of their subscribers switched to cable or IPTV.
Furthermore, in that period a total of 153,000 households replaced their broadcasting service with cable or IPTV.
Cable and IPTV subscribers were satisfied with their channel offering, and those receiving satellite services much more so than the terrestrial TV subscribers receiving only 50-60 channels Antenna Hungária.
