Russian OTT services eye Turkish and Korean content

June 16, 2022 08.59 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Russian OTT platforms are showing a growing number of Turkish and South Korean films and series in order to plug the gap caused by the disappearance of Western premieres from their offers.

According to preliminary results published by TelecomDaily, the number of South Korean titles on Russia’s leading OTT service ivi in the second quarter reached 260, or 1.4 times more than in the same period last year. Meanwhile, the total shown by Okko rose from 178 to 246 over the same period, and by a quarter to 198 at Kinopoisk. However, the biggest increases have been seen at Wink, which is owned by Rostelecom, with the number growing by 1.6 times to 180, and Premier, owned by Gazprom-Media, by 2.3 times to 61.

At the same, the number of Turkish films and series almost doubled, though in absolute numbers the figures were lower than for South Korean. Ivi’s library, for instance, offered 23 compared to 12 a year earlier, Kinopoisk 21 (12), Wink 16 (9) and Kion 18 (9).

Wink now also offers 137 Indian films and series, or 10% more than a year.

Such content nevertheless remains niche, with South Korean titles, for instance, accounting for only between 1-6% of content on Russian OTT platforms.

The leading ones still have libraries dominated by US (29-34%), Russian (17-24%) and UK (9-11%) content.
