Chris Dziadul Reports: NEM Dubrovnik preview

May 6, 2022 10.30 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

We’re now less than a month away from what is the biggest TV industry event in Central and Eastern Europe.

The latest edition of NEM will be held in the Croatian Adriatic city of Dubrovnik from June 6-9 and undoubtedly have a “back to normal” feel about it now that the global pandemic has started to recede. Things to look out for will include a keynote speech by Christina Sulebakk, general manager, HBO Max EMEA, and several interesting panel discussions.

The former will be particularly relevant, given that the premium streaming service HBO Max launched in an additional 15 European markets, all but two of which were in the CEE region, in March this year.

Meanwhile, the panel discussions will start with one entitled View from the Top in the TV industry and feature key executives from Canal+’s M7 Group, Eutelsat and Slovenia’s Pro Plus. Two focused very much on the CEE region will be FTA’s Key Role in a Crisis and Pay TV: Global Trends v CEE trends.

The FTA panel, moderated by Broadband TV News, will feature executives from Croatia’s HRT and Nova TV, along with Slovakia’s TV Markiza. It will undoubtedly look at – amongst other things – how broadcasters in the region have reported on covid and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The pay-TV panel, on the other hand, will seek the views of such key regional players as BBC Studios, AMC Networks, Hrvatski Telekom, Poland’s Cyfrowy Polsat and Bulgaria’s Bulsatcom.

Other panel discussions will look at such areas as leveraging global content, customer attention and FTA reaching a mass audience. Furthermore, there will be considerable time allocated to new legislation for electronic media in Croatia.

Alongside this, there will be a TV Tech Showcase, presentations, meetings and networking, with evening events hosted by ZDF Studios, Beta Film and Telekom Srbija.

All in all, NEM Dubrovnik 2022 promises to be an interesting event as the industry slowly starts to recover from what has been a challenging two years.
