A survey of 1,000 Netflix subscribers in the United States has found every streaming service had an average of at least two individuals who were using the account without paying.
Beyond Identity, which offers multi-factor authentication services, found Netflix was the most popular platform for people to share passwords.
The company also wanted to establish how respondents removed the scroungers from their accounts. Simply changing the password, with the hope the expectation the scrounger would not get in touch was the most popular method.
However, 30% of the scroungers were undeterred and asked account holders to reshare their new credentials. Many account owners then discovered their login information was shared without their knowledge, despite 48% of scroungers living with the account holder.
Worse, more than one in 10 account owners admitted to using the same password for their streaming subscriptions and their bank accounts, and 36% used the same password for their personal email accounts.
Last month, Netflix reported that in addition to its 221.64 million paying households, there are an additional 100 million, including over 30 million in the United States and Canada, sharing the service.
