Nordic streamer Viaplay has grown its subscriber base by 52% year on year as the company continues its international expansion.
A further 778,000 subscribers were added in the quarter to March, bringing the total to 4,783,000. The Netherlands accounted for the majority of the 1,208,000 international subscribers at the end of the quarter.
“The launch of Viaplay in the Netherlands last month has beaten all expectations,” said Viaplay CEO Anders Jensen, adding that it was the primary contributor to the subscriber total.
Income of SEK 602 million included the settlement with TV 2 Denmark. Viaplay’s international ambitions cost the company SEK 305 million.
Following the signature on a new distribution agreement with Sweden’s Tele2, Viaplay has increased its year-end subscriber target for the Nordics from 4.3 million to 4.8 million. The year-end target of 2.2 million international Viaplay subscribers remains unchanged.
