Canal+ added 1.6 million extra subscribers in 2021 as the pay-TV operation made a strong contribution to parent Vivendi.
By the end of December, the total subscriber portfolio stood at 23.7 million, compared to 22.1 million at the end of the previous year. Revenues grew by 5.2% to €5,770 million and profitability climbed 10% to €480 million.
The total subscriber base in mainland France recorded a net increase in subscribers of 373,000 over the past 12 months and reached 9.05 million subscribers. Outside of mainland France, an additional 1.2 million subscribers took the total to 14.7 million.
Subscriber numbers were bolstered by the launch of services in Ethiopia and the debut of myCanal in Africa. The streaming service is now available in 29 countries in Europe and Africa.
In a year of significant developments, Canal took its share in the African pay platform Multichoice over the 15% threshold.
Canal+ Group announced the signing of an agreement with French cinema organisations, extending, at least until 2024, a partnership of more than 30 years. In the process, it gained an earlier view on the pay-TV window with access to titles six months after their theatrical release, in line with its renewed status as the leading contributor to French and European cinema.
