Netflix has decided to suspend its service in Russia in response to the country’s invasion of Ukraine.
The move follows its earlier decision to ignore a new Russian law that came into effect at the beginning of this month, as well as to stop acquisitions and the production of original programmes.
As previously reported by Broadband TV News, the new law requires all media platforms that have more than 100,000 subscribers – Netflix is believed to have under a million – in the country to distribute around 20 FTA Russian news and entertainment channels.
Reuters reports that in a statement about the decision to suspend its service, Netflix said: “Given the circumstances on the ground, we have decided to suspend our service in Russia”.
