Smart TVs and UHD TVs on the rise in Germany

January 25, 2022 09.41 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

The share of smart TVs and UHD TVs among the TV sets sold in Germany has continued to rise in 2021.

A total of 5.9 million TV sets were sold in Germany last year, according to industry association Deutsche TV-Plattform, citing GfK figures. Almost all of these devices are smart TVs (5.5 million). Their share of the total market in 2021 was 94% (2020: 89%).

Three out of four TVs sold in 2021 (4.5 million units) are Ultra HD (UHD) sets, almost all of which support High Dynamic Range (HDR). In total, 23.8 million UHD TVs have been sold in Germany since the UHD introduction.

TV sets with a screen diagonal of 55 inches and larger continue to be in demand. This group accounts for 44% of the total market with around 2.5 million sets sold. More than 20% of consumers opted for a TV with a screen diagonal of at least 65 inches.
