German cable operator Tele Columbus has begun upgrading its network with DOCSIS 3.1 to enable 1Gbps internet access.
With the move, the majority of the around 2.4 million households served by Tele Columbus under its consumer brand PŸUR with internet services will be able to sign up for the high-speed service.
Until now, PŸUR offered internet speeds of up to 400Mbps on its network. In August 2019, the company launched the first gigabit offer for around 500,000 households in Berlin.
Now, the nationwide DOCSIS 3.1 rollout has begun. 69,000 households can order the new high-speed service immediately, for example in Frankfurt, Offenbach and Flensburg.
Tele Columbus expects the nationwide network upgrade to DOCSIS 3.1 to be completed by mid-2023. Over the next 10 years, the cable operator plans to invest €2 billion in network upgrades and fibre-optic deployments.
