Romania awards additional 5G licences

November 24, 2021 11.26 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

The Romanian regulator ANCOM has announced the results of a tender for 5G licences.

The licences were awarded to RCS&RDS and Invite Systems. In the case of RCS&RDS, they are for the 800 and 2600 MHz bands, with the company paying a total of €42.7 million and validity being from January 1, 2022 to April 5, 2029. Meanwhile, Invite Systems won a block in the 3400-3600 MHz band for €700,000, with the validity being from January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2025.

Commenting on the award, ANCOM president Bogdan Iana said: “Today we finalized the tender for the allocation of new frequencies for mobile broadband communications, after which the two winning participants will pay to the state budget the amount of €43.4 million, which represents 60% of the value of the spectrum provided. We decided to organise the auction this year in order to offer the opportunity to the interested operators to maximise their portfolio of spectrum, in order to expand the capacity of their own networks and, consequently, to be able to offer state-of-the-art services. This allocation of additional spectrum for broadband mobile communications services will give a new breath to the competition on the Romanian telecom market, for the benefit of end users”.
