Chris Dziadul Reports: Amazon heads East

November 5, 2021 09.09 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Late last month Amazon Prime made its debut in Central and Eastern Europe.

As a result, Poland is now one of 22 countries worldwide in which Prime memberships are available.

Although Amazon has been present in Poland since 2014 and launched Prime Video in late 2016 as part of a global rollout that included CEE, Amazon.pl only made its debut in March this year. Now, however, it employs over 23,000 people in 10 logistical sites, an Amazon Web Services office and Technology Development Centre.

Amazon is also growing rapidly in other parts of the region. In Romania, for instance, it has already invested over €100 million and earlier this year announced plans to launch three more offices.

The launch of Amazon Prime in Poland is particularly significant for users in that they can now access the full range of Amazon services, including Prime Video, for PLN10.99 (€2.39) a month or PLN49 for a whole year, with the first month free. This compares to the PLN25.99 a month they were paying for Prime Video prior to Prime’s launch and they can switch to the new and more affordable offer.

Although Netflix is by far and away the most popular on demand service in Poland at present, its cost is higher. The Basic package comes at PLN29 a month and Standard and Premium packages PLN43 and PLN60 respectively.

Amazon Prime, including Prime Video, may therefore look like an attractive alternative, especially given the fact that Amazon has moved quickly in the country following the launch of Prime by also introducing international versions of Fire TV Stick 4K Max and Fire TV Stick. Opting for Fire TV, and employing Alexa, gives users access to thousands of apps, channels, movies and series.

According to Statista, Prime Video had around 158,000 subscribers in Poland as of the end of 2018. This put the country in first place in CEE, ahead of Romania (75,000) and Czech Republic (57,000).

Three years on, these figures are likely to be considerably higher, with those in Poland now really likely to take off.
