Virgin Media Ireland has announced a €200 million upgrade of its broadband network over the next three years.
It will create around 500 jobs and provide customers with access speeds of up to 10 Gbps.
Speaking in a press briefing, Paul Higgins, VP commercial, Virgin Media Ireland, said that the move will be a natural extension following on from the introduction of a 1 Giga product last year. There has been a 91% increase in internet usage in the last 18-24 months and it is all about giving customers choice and flexibility.
Higgins said that although the company will continue expanding its network, the upgrade will only take place on existing infrastructure. Furthermore, it has already piloted the technology in 500 homes.
He also said that there will be wholesale access to the upgraded network. Funding for the upgrade will come entirely from within the company.
Higgins refused to discuss a possible change in Virgin Media Ireland’s ownership. “We don’t comment on speculation. We’re completely focused on delivering this upgrade”.
