Vodafone to convert Horizon into GigaTV boxes

October 25, 2021 11.10 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

Vodafone Deutschland wants to transform the Horizon cable receivers of its customers in the former Unitymedia coverage area in federal states North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse and Baden-Württemberg into GigaTV boxes via a software update.

The update is to be gradually rolled out to the devices from spring 2022, affecting several hundred thousand TV customers. The process is to be completed by autumn 2022.

With the move, Vodafone Deutschland is harmonising the technical infrastructure of cable households. For new customers in North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse and Baden-Württemberg, the GigaTV Cable Box 2 has already been the standard reception device since September 2021 – as it is in all other federal states.

Following the acquisition of Unitymedia, Vodafone confirmed in July 2019 that the Horizon box of Unitymedia’s parent company Liberty Global would be replaced by its own GigaTV product.
