South Africa finally has a timetable for the completion of digital switchover.
The country’s cabinet has now approved the integrated analogue switch-off implementation plan that envisages the completion of the process by March 2022.
The Cabinet has endorsed the approach towards a so-called “fast track” approach that would also clear spectrum for 5G operations.
Last month, the North Gauteng High Court ruled the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) could proceed with plans to license so-called ‘high-demand spectrum’
Operator Telkom and broadcaster e.tv had sought to delay the process, to the frustration of mobile operators MTN and Vodacom. The two had wanted to ensure switchover had been completed before the auction process got underway and had called for a full review.
“In framing the truncated timetable and roadmap, the Authority was mindful of the need for the expedited licensing process to be completed with exigency whilst adhering to a comprehensive and transparent consultative process,” says ICASA Chairperson, Dr Keabetswe Modimoeng.
“We would like to urge all interested stakeholders to participate fully in this consultative engagement and to engage openly and robustly to ensure that no further impediments are placed in the way of the finalisation of this critical economic intervention.”
