Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has given details of how many accounts are viewing the streamer’s most popular shows.
The company is often guarded over who is watching what, but at Vox Media’s Code Conference in Beverly Hills, Sarandos revealed Netflix’s Most Popular Series and Films by both number of accounts viewing them and viewing hours.
Shonda Rhimes’ period drama Bridgerton tops the Series list with 82 million accounts and 625 million viewing hours in the four weeks following its release at Christmas 2020.
Second in the viewing list is Lupin (76 million accounts), season one of The Witcher (76 million), season one of Sex/Life (67 million), and season three of Stranger Things (67 million).
Accounts are recorded after 2 minutes viewing time.
The movie Bird Box received the most viewing hours at 282 million, but was knocked into second place by Extraction in terms of accounts viewed, by 10 million at 99 million. Spenser Confidential was viewed by 85 million accounts, 6 Underground (83 million), and Murder Mystery (83 million).
Sarandos said that by being more transparent about its audiences, Netflix hoped it would be able to give an indication to producers of what was driving the Hollywood Zeitgeist.
