BT Sport is in the frame to win the broadcast rights to this winter’s Ashes test series in Australia.
As reported in the Daily Mail, the broadcaster has seen off competition from Sky Sports, its main rival for cricket rights.
BT previously paid £80 million for the rights to all Cricket Australia’s UK rights between 2016 and 2021. Included are all of Australia’s home internationals and the Twenty20 Big Bash League.
However, there is some uncertainty as to whether this winter’s tour will go ahead. England’s players have been working with their governing body to seek an exemption to Australia’s tough Covid policy. Players have told the ECB they see the ability to spend a fortnight with their families during the Melbourne and Sydney Tests as a minimum, without which they would be unwilling to tour.
BT has also secured the rights to New Zealand’s and West Indies’ home internationals.
Sky Sports holds exclusive rights to England’s domestic internationals and shares the rights to The Hundred limited overs competition with the BBC.
