Former ITV chairman Adam Crozier is in line to become the new chairman of BT.
The 57 year old was reported by The Sunday Times to have beaten three other candidates to the post vacated by Jan du Plessis in March.
Crozier is expected to resign the chairmanship of online fashion retailer Asos, but stay on as chairman of Whitbread, owner of the Premier Inn chain, and of Kantar, the data analytics business.
The executive spent seven years at ITV, where he is credited in reducing the broadcaster’s reliance on advertising revenue, and building its content business. However, while he was able to turn a profit at Royal Mail, he was criticised by unions for a string of post office closures and redundancies.
BT is engaged in the rollout of full fibre broadband to 25 million homes by 2026. While Ofcom has increased the target by an additional five million from the original plan, BT hopes to capitalise on the more favourable terms granted to its infrastructure division Openreach.
However, it faces competition from Virgin Media O2 and a series of independent fibre companies.
BT has said the appointment process is still underway.
