O2 TV secures key football rights

July 1, 2021 09.08 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

O2 TV has extended its broadcasting rights to the top Czech football competition Fortuna:Liga for a further two seasons.

Furthermore, from the new year matches from the league will only be shown exclusively on O2 TV Sport and O2 TV Fotbal. Commenting on the development, Anna Lenerova, head of O2 TV content, said: “Fortuna: Liga perfectly complements our premium sports content on O2 TV, which includes, for example, the hockey extra league, the WTA tennis circuit and the English Premier League at Premier Sport. Now we have managed to activate the pre-emption right for the Czech Football League 2023 and 2023/2024, our customer is still confident that they will not lose any match, any club”.

This will be due to O2 TV exercising an option in the contract with Pragosport, which holds the broadcasting rights to the league.

O2 TV Sport will now produce four TV matches in the best broadcast quality from each round of Fortuna:Liga. It will also stream another four games.

Marek Kindernay, executive director of O2 TV Sport, added: “A summer full of innovations awaits us. We are preparing a new broadcast format Fortuna: Liga, we are finalising the construction of a new studio, where we will also have augmented reality, allowing for the insertion of 3D graphics or transferring guests from anywhere to the studio, to the delight of O2 TV viewers”.

Dusan Svoboda, chairman of the League Committee of the Football League Association, said: “We are very pleased that Fortuna:Liga has become a sought-after product and attracts growing interest from TV viewers, which has led O2 to exercise its option to extend its broadcasting rights. It is proof of stability and a good signal for the future for us and the league clubs. The quality of broadcasts and the overall coverage of all Fortuna: Liga matches as the most watched professional competition in the Czech Republic is also important to us”.
