Telcos have had a chequered history of involvement in the content sector. Over the last month AT&T has left Warner Media in the hands of Discovery, BT has announced a review of its sports channel and Eir has closed its channel altogether. Has the telcos’ ability to stick with content for the long term changed since the creation of their own portals on the internet or does the presence of a TV service no longer shift subscriptions to mobile or broadband services? Will we go through this all over again with 5G or are their deals to be had for the incumbent TV companies?
Broadband TV News editor Julian Clover asks if telcos should be in show business or keep to the pipe business in the company of former Vice President of TV Business Europe at Deutsche Telekom, Anette Schaefer; Cyrus Mewawalla, Head of Thematic Research at GlobalData and David Short, Digital Media and Technology Consultant at Malkani Systems.
