The boss of Canal+ Group, Maxime Saada, has said he cannot be certain if top-flight French football will be on the pay-TV channel next season.
Canal picked up the rights earlier this year after the collapse of the agreement between LFP and rights broker MediaPro.
In an interview with RMC Sport, Saada said the average sum paid for the rights since 2005 had been €650 million, the product had deteriorated. “Canal + alone, that would be difficult. If I were to broadcast the whole competition and pay the league what they are seeking, I would have to increase the price of Canal + for customers.” He added that for 10 matches a week Canal would have to charge €40. But Mediapro had shown that a monthly subscription of €25 didn’t work.
Saada suggested the solution might be an agreement between Canal and BeIN Sports to share the rights.
