Romania ended 2020 with 7.8 million pay-TV subscribers.
According to data published by the regulator ANCOM, 5.8 million opted for cable services, RCS&RDS was the leading pay-TV operator, accounting for 61% of subscribers. It was followed by Telekom with 15% and other providers with a combined total of 24%.
There were also 5.7 million fixed internet connections in Romania as of the end of 202, or 8% more than a year earlier.
Of these, 4.5 million, or almost 80%, were very high speed (100 Mbps+). Again, RCS&RDS was the market leader, accounting for 59% of fixed connections. It was followed by Telekom with 19% and other providers with a combined 22%.
Total revenues in the telecom sector in 2020 amounted to RON16.7 billion (over €3.4 billion), or 1% more than in 2019. This was equivalent to 1.6% of the country’s GDP. The TV broadcast segment accounted for 14% of the total.
ARPU in the telecom sector was RON72 per inhabitant, up by RON1 on the previous year. In revenue terms, Orange was the market leader (25%), closely followed by Vodafone (24%), Telekom (24%) and other providers (totalling 26%).
